The first step on the road to deciding whether you want a writing mentor is to be sure you know what you are getting from this deal.
So, what is a writing mentor?
A writing mentor is someone with industry and practical experience in writing and/or publishing. They are typically well into their career. They likely have publications. Most importantly of all, they are looking to share their experiences with other writers. A mentor will offer support through meetings and consultations, to help any individual in developing and furthering their creative careers.
What can I offer as a mentor?
I hold a Doctorate degree in Creative Writing from the University of Birmingham, alongside a Masters (with Distinction) in Creative Writing and a BA (Hons) in English and English language. I have published ten novels to date, with an additional one forthcoming in August 2023. I have also published a number of poetry collections; collaborated on poetry collections; co-edited both fiction and poetry anthologies, among other creative endeavours.
I hold considerable experience in teaching Creative Writing to a range of ability levels, most recently in my post as a Lecturer in Creative and Professional Writing at the University of Wolverhampton. Prior to this, I lectured at Newman University, University of Worcester and University of Birmingham.
I specialise in crime and psychological thriller fiction. However, in March 2022 my debut romantic comedy was published by HQ. Subsequently, I hold a reasonable level of experience in working across and moving between several genres of writing.
What mentor package is available?
For an introductory offer, I will provide 5 hours of face-to-face discussion; this is typically arranged via a video call. Those 5 hours will be charged at a fee of £200, which is payable up front (although we can discuss this further if an installment basis would be easier), to be paid through a Bank Transfer.
Those 5 hours can be tailored entirely to the needs of the individual, including (but not limited to) topics such as:
In regards to written feedback, this will be available as an "add on" and charged at £25 for written feedback on up to 1,500 words.
The 5 hours will, ideally, be broken into five sessions of 1 hour each. However, the timeline of these sessions is also something that can be tailored to the individual, i.e. sessions can be weekly, monthly or other, depending on needs.

I’ve found the sessions to not only be informative but supportive in every way. Charley has a way of creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment instantly where you can talk about anything which will help you get where you want to be. The sessions were designed with what I needed at each point over the three months we met. She was always happy to answer and questions (no matter how small, because there really is no silly question) she is honest and transparent about the industry and always strived to provide as much information as possible within the time slot.
Charley is a fantastic writer and mentor, and I am so grateful for the time she gave me. Throughout our coaching sessions, she helped delve into and eradicate the issues holding me back from querying, and then she helped me figure out who to send my work to and how to move forward. Ultimately, Charley has helped me get closer than ever to my dream of being a published author, and her help has been invaluable.
Does this sound like it would be helpful? Let's talk!

This also gives you an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the process, and to get to know me a little better ahead of us working together, if you decide to proceed with a booking.
